Highlighting Three New Grantmaking Initiatives
Hillman Family Foundations spent 2019 tackling even bigger and bolder challenges with a widening network of partners. This section highlights three grantmaking initiatives that are remarkably unique yet similarly focused on helping Pittsburghers thrive.
Healthy Allegheny Challenge
“On its own, medical care is not enough to create better health in our communities,” says Dr. Lynne Williams, who serves as executive director of Southwest PA AHEC. The hurdles to better health extend even higher when residents are disconnected from opportunity and struggling just to get by.
Enter community health workers, who focus on helping patients address acute needs—like work, food or housing insecurity—while also supporting pathways to better health care.
Human Services Capitalization Pilot
Launched in 2019, the project issued a challenge to necessary, but financially fragile local human services organizations to imagine how an infusion of extraordinary financial capital coupled with technical assistance could help to not only stabilize—but ideally evolve—the way they do business in their respective fields of work.
Blueprint for Learning
