President’s Letter

By the time 2018 came to a close, approximately ninety percent of the late Henry Hillman’s estate had been transferred to the Henry L. Hillman Foundation and to the thirteen foundations of his children and grandchildren.

It was a year of extraordinary growth and a chance to pursue new opportunities.

With the additional resources provided by Henry’s generosity, we were able to support grantees in implementing a number of critical community initiatives and programs, including:

  • Assisting mothers and children facing significant health and safety risks;
  • Creating education, training, and employment paths for people at greatest risk of being left behind;
  • Promoting inclusive innovation while expanding access to the city’s emerging economy;
  • Investing in emerging neighborhoods; and,
  • Supporting critical research in medicine, technology, and innovation.

“The growth that we experienced in 2018—while unprecedented in the history of the Hillman Family Foundations—is rooted in years of preparation and careful planning.”

We helped advance this work with and through our committed, critical partners—organizations large and small that are pushing for progress on the region’s frontlines. The company we kept included InnovatePGH, a public-private partnership focused on orchestrating Pittsburgh’s next act as a global innovation hub. We also collaborated with Forward Cities, a national nonprofit that is working with many Pittsburgh stakeholders with the explicit focus of nurturing an inclusive entrepreneurial ecosystem. Other partners—including the Tri-COG Land Bank, ioby, Hilltop Alliance Urban Farm and the Triboro EcoDistrict—are charting new approaches to sparking equitable and community-level economic development throughout the region.

While our work has evolved, so too has our team, which is led by a dedicated board and powered by talented staff with relevant expertise and deep community relationships. In 2018, we welcomed new board, committee, and staff members as well as external collaborators and backbone organizations. As a result, we are now better positioned to advance our mission, and the missions of those we support, forging a shared path to success.

The growth that we experienced in 2018—while unprecedented in the history of the Hillman Family Foundations—is rooted in years of preparation and careful planning. It is both a strategic advance toward a bigger and bolder future and a carefully calculated next step. Guided by the inspiration of where we have been, we are confident that we are on the right track and are looking forward to what’s around the next corner.

Sincerely,

David K. Roger
President
